WASHINGTON — A new report says Black America held steady and Hispanic America improved slightly during former President Barack Obama's final year. But the National Urban League says progress may be in danger under President Donald Trump. Its State of Black America report uses an equality index, with 100 percent being full equality with whites. The equality index for blacks was 72.3 percent in 2016, a small increase from 2015's 72.2 percent. The equality index for Hispanics was 78.4 percent, which is an increase from 77.9 percent in 2015.

ATLANTA (AP) — The National Urban League released its annual report on the State of Black America on Tuesday, and its findings are grim. This year’s Equality Index shows Black people still get only 73.9% of the American pie white people enjoy.

This week marked the release of the National Urban League’s annual “State of Black America” report with a special launch event at Morehouse, an historically Black college in Atlanta.

Titled, “Democracy in Peril: Confronting the Threat Within,” the 2023 report says that “hate crimes ballooned in 2021.”

FBI statistics also reveal that hate crimes reached a two-decade high in 2020, and more than half of these crimes (over 60%) were directed at African Americans.

The State of Black America report is an annual study that covers a variety of topics under one central theme. This year’s theme is titled “The State of Black America Under Siege: The Plot to Destroy Democracy,” and it is the organization’s 46th edition in the series.
